Iti vivaṭena cetasā a-pariyonaddhena |

Sap-pabhāsaṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. |

The thought occurred to me, |
‘sace kho ahaṃ obhāsañceva sañjāneyyaṃ rūpāni ca passeyyaṃ; |
‘If I perceived light and saw forms, |
evaṃ me idaṃ ñāṇadassanaṃ parisuddhataraṃ assā’”ti. |
then this knowledge-&-vision of mine would be purer.’ |

staying heedful, ardent, & resolute— |
2. obhāsañceva sañjānāmi, rūpāni ca passāmi, |

3. tāhi ca devatāhi saddhiṃ santiṭṭhāmi sallapāmi sākacchaṃ samāpajjāmi, |
3. and associated with those devas, conversed with them, and engaged them in discussion; |
tā ca devatā jānāmi — |
and I also knew of those devas that |
4. ‘imā devatā amukamhā vā amukamhā vā devanikāyā’ti, |
4. ‘These devas are from this or that deva host’; |
tā ca devatā jānāmi — |
and I also knew of those devas that |
5. ‘imā devatā imassa kammassa vipākena ito cutā tattha upapannā’ti, |
5. ‘As a result of this kamma, these devas fell away from here and reappeared there’; |
tā ca devatā jānāmi — |
and I also knew of those devas that |
6. ‘imā devatā evamāhārā evaṃsukhadukkhappaṭisaṃvediniyo’ti, |
6. ‘As a result of this kamma, these devas are nourished on such food and experience such pleasure & pain’; |

and I also knew of those devas that |
7. ‘imā devatā evaṃdīghāyukā evaṃciraṭṭhitikā’ti, |
7. ‘As a result of this kamma, these devas have such a lifespan and are of such long standing’; |
tā ca devatā jānāmi |
and I also knew of those devas |
8. yadi vā me devatāhi saddhiṃ sannivutthapubbaṃ yadi vā na sannivutthapubbanti. |
8. whether I had previously lived together with them or not. |

“And, monks, as long as this— |
evaṃ aṭṭhaparivaṭṭaṃ adhidevañāṇadassanaṃ na suvisuddhaṃ ahosi, |
my eight-round heightened deva-knowledge-&-vision—was not pure, |
neva tāvāhaṃ, bhikkhave, |
I did not claim |
‘sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ abhisambuddho’ti VAR paccaññāsiṃ. |
to have directly awakened to the right self-awakening unexcelled in the cosmos with its devas, Māras, & Brahmās, with its people with their contemplatives & brahmans, their royalty & commonfolk. |

evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ |
Knowledge-(and)-vision-****-acquisition (this) leads to. |
ñāṇa-dassanap-paṭi-lābhāya saṃvattati. |
“Mendicants, before my awakening—when I was still not awake but intent on awakening—I perceived light but did not see visions. |
“pubbāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samāno obhāsaññeva kho sañjānāmi, no ca rūpāni passāmi. (1) |
Then it occurred to me: |
Tassa mayhaṃ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: |
‘What if I were to both perceive light and see visions? |
‘sace kho ahaṃ obhāsañceva sañjāneyyaṃ rūpāni ca passeyyaṃ; |
Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.’ |
evaṃ me idaṃ ñāṇadassanaṃ parisuddhataraṃ assā’ti. |
So after some time, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, I perceived light and saw visions. |
So kho ahaṃ, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto obhāsañceva sañjānāmi, rūpāni ca passāmi; |
But I didn’t associate with those deities, converse, or engage in discussion. |
no ca kho tāhi devatāhi saddhiṃ santiṭṭhāmi sallapāmi sākacchaṃ samāpajjāmi. (2) |
(oil lamp simile, pure oil and pure wick) | |
“Suppose an oil-lamp is burning with pure oil and a pure wick; because of the purity of its oil and its wick it does not burn dimly. So too, here a bhikkhu abides resolved upon and pervading [an area with] a pure radiance. His bodily inertia has fully subsided, his sloth and torpor have been fully eliminated, his restlessness and remorse have been fully removed; because of this he meditates, as it were, brightly. On the dissolution of the body, after death, he reappears in the company of the gods of Pure Radiance. [152] |
seyyathāpi, āvuso kaccāna, telappadīpassa jhāyato telampi parisuddhaṃ vaṭṭipi parisuddhā. so telassapi parisuddhattā vaṭṭiyāpi parisuddhattā na andhandhaṃ viya jhāyati; evameva kho, āvuso kaccāna, idhekacco bhikkhu ‘parisuddhābhā’ti pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati. tassa kāyaduṭṭhullampi suppaṭippassaddhaṃ hoti, thinamiddhampi susamūhataṃ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccampi suppaṭivinītaṃ hoti. so kāyaduṭṭhullassapi suppaṭippassaddhattā thinamiddhassapi susamūhatattā uddhaccakukkuccassapi suppaṭivinītattā na andhandhaṃ viya jhāyati. so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parisuddhābhānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjati. |
“This is the cause and reason, friend Kaccāna, why among those deities that have reappeared in the same order of gods, some are deities of Defiled Radiance, some deities of Pure Radiance.” |
ayaṃ kho, āvuso kaccāna, hetu ayaṃ paccayo yena tāsaṃ devatānaṃ ekaṃ devanikāyaṃ upapannānaṃ santettha ekaccā devatā saṃkiliṭṭhābhā, santi panettha ekaccā devatā parisuddhābhā”ti. |
“Good, good, Anuruddha and friends! But as you live diligently like this, have you achieved any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, a meditation at ease?” |
“Sādhu sādhu, anuruddhā. Atthi pana vo, anuruddhā, evaṃ appamattānaṃ ātāpīnaṃ pahitattānaṃ viharataṃ uttari manussadhammā alamariyañāṇadassanaviseso adhigato phāsuvihāro”ti? |
“Well, sir, while meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, we perceive both light and vision of forms. But before long the light and the vision of forms vanish. We haven’t worked out the reason for that.” |
“Idha mayaṃ, bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharantā obhāsañceva sañjānāma dassanañca rūpānaṃ. So kho pana no obhāso nacirasseva antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṃ; tañca nimittaṃ nappaṭivijjhāmā”ti. |

“Well, you should work out the reason for that. Before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I too perceived both light and vision of forms. But before long my light and vision of forms vanished. It occurred to me: ‘What’s the cause, what’s the reason why my light and vision of forms vanish?’ It occurred to me: ‘Doubt arose in me, and because of that my undistractible-lucidity fell away. When undistractible-lucidity falls away, the light and vision of forms vanish. I’ll make sure that doubt will not arise in me again.’ |
“Taṃ kho pana vo, anuruddhā, nimittaṃ paṭivijjhitabbaṃ. Ahampi sudaṃ, anuruddhā, pubbeva sambodhā anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samāno obhāsañceva sañjānāmi dassanañca rūpānaṃ. So kho pana me obhāso nacirasseva antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṃ. Tassa mayhaṃ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yena me obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānan’ti? Tassa mayhaṃ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘vicikicchā kho me udapādi, vicikicchādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi. Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṃ. Sohaṃ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissatī’ti. (1) |
