Aritta version of APS eliminates craving for sensual pleasure and aversion.
Buddha says that is APS, but he then explains 54.3 is the official preferred 16 steps in detail of APS

no shaking or trembling in body (or mind). shift to APSS terminology from just APS. Showing that 16 steps of APSS can not be limited to satipatthana category, but is also samadhi.

16 steps APSS
buddha frequently abided in APSS before awakening.
16 benefits for APSS. body and eyes not tired, removing resolves of household life, 5 types of upekkha training, 9 meditative attainments (4 jhanas, 4 formless, sanna-vedayita-nirodham).
3 types vedana seen as impermanent, not grasped at, not relished.
feeling limited to body, and feeling limited to life, if not relished, with the break up of body and after death "grows cold right there"
simile of lamp, note use of words "jhayeyya" and "nibbayeyya" relate to jhana (somewhat) and nibbana .

SN 54.9 0m, Vesālī: (name of place)
suicide of scores of bhikkhus because of asubha practice.
ananda says: "it would be good if the blessed one explained another method of establishing final knowledge."
16APS is then taught as an additional tool.

SN 54.10 0m, Kimbila: (name of monk)
4 tetrads of APSS fulfill 4 tetrads of satipatthana.
Up until this point they were just 16 steps, not explicitly correlated with 4sp.
SN 54.2 does however give the license to combine any of 7sb with 16 APS as you see fit.

buddha does 3 month vassa solitary retreat using 16 steps of APSS. 
Says if people ask what he did during retreat, should tell them he abides in noble dwelling, tathagatha's dwelling. 
not arahant yet, you should do APSS.
if arahant, still do APSS for pleasant dwelling, and sati sampajano S&S🐘💭.

expanded version of 54.11, with prelude explaining how a trainee and arahant practice APS differently in terms of 5 hindrances abandoned, versus cut off permanently.
