Ambapāli (name of famous courtesan) Vagga 1

SN 47.1 - 🔗🔊 2m, Ambapāli: (name of famous courtesan)
STED sammā sati (4sp🐘) formula, prefaced by famous statement:
“Monks, the four kinds of [☸Dharma-instruction] remembering
is the only way to purify sentient beings,
1) to go beyond sorrow and lamentation,
2) to make an end of pain and distress,
3) to complete the procedure,
4) and to realize nirvana.

SN 47.2 - 🔗🔊 2.5m, Sato: Rememberful
Here the Buddha gives the important STED definition for S&S🐘💭:
And how is a monk rememberful (sati)? By keeping in mind, being mindful and rememberful of ☸Dharma, specifically, the 4sp🐘 as the default Dharma, unless another set of Dharma instructions in context is more appropriate at the time.

And how is a monk lucidly-discerning (sam-pajāno)?
It’s when a monk acts with lucid-discerning when going out and coming back; when looking ahead and aside; when bending and extending the limbs; when bearing the outer robe, bowl and robes; when eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting; when urinating and defecating; when walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking, speaking, and keeping silent.

SN 47.3 - 🔗🔊 5m, Bhikkhu: monk
when your ethics are well purified and your view is correct, you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation in three ways, depending on and grounded on ethics. (practice 4sp🐘 internally, externally, both) to arahanthship

SN 47.4 - 🔗🔊 5m, Sālā: (name of village):
all 4sp🐘 are done simultaneously with jhāna samādhi:
Those monks who are trainees—who haven’t achieved their heart’s desire, but live assiduously aspiring to the supreme sanctuary—also meditate observing the body as a body — ardent, lucidly discerning, transcended-into-singularity, with a clear mind, undistractible-&-lucid, mind with singular-preoccupation, so as to fully understand the body.
Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū sekhā appattamānasā anuttaraṃ yogakkhemaṃ patthayamānā viharanti, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa pariññāya;

SN 47.5 - 🔗🔊 2m, Kusala-rāsi: skillful heap
5niv⛅ are heap of akusala, 4sp🐘 are heap of kusala

SN 47.6 - 🔗🔊 6m, Sakuṇagghi: 🐦 (the) quail:

SN 47.7 - 🔗🔊 6m, Makkaṭa: 🐒 (the) monkey:
always stay in 4sp🐘, to avoid death

SN 47.8 - 🔗🔊 9m, sūda: 👩‍🍳 🍳 The cook:
simile of cook: how to use 4sp🐘 (learning the sign (nimitta))to take you into jhanas. Obtaining pleasant abiding here and now is a code phrase for the first 3 jhānas (AN 6.29), or all 4 jhānas (AN 4.41).

SN 47.9 - 🔗🔊 9.5m, Gilāna: sick
buddha close to death but prolongs life, controls body pain with animitta samadhi, and declares the 4sp🐘 is your lamp, island, refuge, not the Buddha or one of his great disciples.

SN 47.10 - 🔗🔊 8m, bhikkhun-upassaya: Nuns-quarters:
How to use 4sp🐘 (and 7sb☀️) to take you into first jhāna using V&V💭. Once that skill is mastered, V&V not needed to bring you into jhāna, you directly jump to "undirected development", which is equivalent to jumping to step #5 of 7sb to enter samādhi.

Nālandā (name of place) Vagga 2

SN 47.11 0m, Mahāpurisa: a great man:
is one who practices 4sp

SN 47.12 0m, Nālandā:

SN 47.13 0m, Cunda:
sariputta passes. So Ānanda, be your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge. Tasmātihānanda, attadīpā viharatha attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā, dhammadīpā dhammasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā. And how does a mendicant do this? Kathañcānanda, bhikkhu attadīpo viharati attasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo, dhammadīpo dhammasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo? (with 4sp)
