āyasmantaṃ udāyiṃ āmantesi:
{addressed} venerable Udayi {*******}:
“kati nu kho, udāyi,
{Udayi}, how-many ** ****, {*****},
Anus-satiṭ-ṭhānānī”ti?
{practices}-(should be)-recollected?
Evaṃ vutte,
When asked,
āyasmā udāyī tuṇhī ahosi.
venerable Udayi {was} silent {*****}.
Dutiyam-pi kho bhagavā
(for the) second-time, *** the-Blessed-One
āyasmantaṃ udāyiṃ āmantesi:
{addressed} venerable Udayi {*******}:
“kati nu kho, udāyi,

“satthā taṃ, āvuso udāyi, āmantesī”ti.

many-instances (of) previous-abodes-[lives]
anus-sarati,

like-this -
ekampi jātiṃ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo pañcapi jātiyo
one birth, two births, three births, four births, five births,
dasapi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṃsampi jātiyo cattālīsampi jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo
ten births, twenty births, thirty births, forty births, fifty births,
jāti-satampi jāti-sahassampi jāti-sata-sahassampi
one hundred births, one thousand births, one hundred thousand births,
anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe
many contractions-(of cosmic)-aeons,
anekepi vivaṭṭa-kappe
many expansions-(of cosmic)-aeons,
anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe –
many contractions-&-expansions-(of cosmic)-aeons, [recollecting],
‘amutrāsiṃ
There
evaṃ-nāmo evaṃ-gotto
(I had) such-(a)-name, such-(a)-clan,
evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro
such-(an)-appearance, such-(was my)-food,
evaṃ-sukha-dukkhap-paṭisaṃvedī
such-pleasure-(and)-pain-(I)-experienced,
evam-āyu-pariyanto,
such-(my)-age-limit [expired].
so tato cuto
he, (from) that-state, passed-away,
amutra udapādiṃ [uppādiṃ (sī.)];
there, (re)-arose.

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi:
Then *** the-Blessed-One {addressed} Venerable Ananda:
“aññāsiṃ kho ahaṃ, ānanda:
{I} *** knew, Ananda:
‘nevāyaṃ udāyī mogha-puriso
'this udāyi (is a) foolish-man!
Adhi-cittaṃ anuyutto viharatī’ti.
[he does not] {dwell} devoted (to the) higher-mind.
Kati nu kho, ānanda, anussatiṭṭhānānī”ti?
Ānanda, how many practices should be recollected?
“Pañca, bhante, anussatiṭṭhānāni.
“Five (of these), ******, practices-should-be-recollected.

Idha, bhante, bhikkhu
Here, Lord, (a) monk -
vivicc’eva kāmehi
Quite-withdrawn (from) sensual-pleasure-objects,
vivicca akusalehi dhammehi
withdrawn (from) unskillful qualities,
sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ
With-thought, with-evaluation,
vivekajaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ
withdrawal rapture-pleasure,
paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā
Thought-(and)-evaluation stilling,
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ
internal assurance,
cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ
awareness unification,

No-Thought, no-evaluation,
samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ
Samādhi-based rapture-pleasure,
dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.

pītiyā ca virāgā
Rapture ** fading,
upekkhako ca viharati
Equanimous ** (he) dwells,
sato ca sampajāno,
mindful and alert,
sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti,
pleasure with-the-body (he) experiences,
yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti —
that those Noble-Ones declare -
‘upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ti
“equanimous (and) mindful (he has) pleasant-abiding.”
tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.
third Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.
Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ
This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ
Thus developed, thus pursued,
diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihārāya saṃvattati.
In-this-very-life-(a)-happy-dwelling (it) leads-to.

(2. STED smd-asnd: āloka-saññaṃ leads to ñāṇa-dassanap-paṭi-lābhāya )

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu
“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,
āloka-saññaṃ manasi karoti,
Luminosity-perception: (his) mind attends.
Divā-saññaṃ adhiṭṭhāti—
daytime-perception (he is) resolved on.
yathā divā tathā rattiṃ,
as-by Day so-by night,
yathā rattiṃ tathā divā.
As-by-night so-by day,
Iti vivaṭena cetasā a-pariyonaddhena
(By means of an) *** open awareness, un-enveloped,
Sap-pabhāsaṃ cittaṃ bhāveti.
***-luminous mind, (he) develops.
Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ
This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ
Thus developed, thus pursued,
ñāṇa-dassanap-paṭi-lābhāya saṃvattati.
Knowledge-(and)-vision-****-acquisition (this) leads to.

(3. STED 31asb: 31 non-beautiful body parts for removal of kāma-rāga)

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu
“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,
Imam-eva kāyaṃ
(In) this-very body,
uddhaṃ pāda-talā
up (from the) feet-base,
adho kesa-matthakā
below head-hair-(on)-top,
Taca-pariyantaṃ
Skin-enclosed,
pūraṃ nāna-p-pakārassa A-sucino
Full-of many-*-things Im-pure.
paccavekkhati:
(he) reflects:
‘atthi imasmiṃ kāye
There-are in-this body:
kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco,
Head-hairs, body-hairs, nails, teeth, skin,
maṃsaṃ nhāru aṭṭhi aṭṭhi-miñjaṃ vakkaṃ,
flesh, tendons, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys,
hadayaṃ yakanaṃ kilomakaṃ pihakaṃ papphāsaṃ,
heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs,
antaṃ antaguṇaṃ udariyaṃ karīsaṃ,
Large-intestines, small-intestines, stomach, feces,
pittaṃ semhaṃ pubbo lohitaṃ sedo medo,
bile, phelgm, pus, blood, sweat, fat,
assu vasā kheḷo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttan’ti.
tears, skin-oil, saliva, mucous, fluid-in-the-joints, (and) urine.
Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ
This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ
Thus developed, thus pursued,
Kāma-rāgap-pahānāya saṃvattati.
sensuality-(and)-lust’s-removal (this) leads-to.

(4. STED 9siv: stages of corpse decay, for removal of self and conceit Asmi-māna-samugghātāya)

Tīha-mataṃ vā

uddhumātakaṃ
swollen,
vinīlakaṃ

2.crows, hawks, devour

kākehi vā khajjamānaṃ
Crows ** devoured (it),
kulalehi vā khajjamānaṃ
Hawks ** devoured (it),
gijjhehi vā khajjamānaṃ
Vultures ** devoured (it),
sunakhehi vā khajjamānaṃ
Dogs ** devoured (it),
siṅgālehi vā khajjamānaṃ
Foxes ** devoured (it),
vividhehi vā pāṇaka-jātehi khajjamānaṃ.
Diverse ** insects-born-inside devoured (it),
So imameva kāyaṃ evaṃ upasaṃharati:

aññena jaṅgh-aṭṭhikaṃ

aññena ūruṭṭhikaṃ
here (a) thigh-bone,

(5. STED 4th jhāna for aneka-dhātu-paṭi-vedhāya)

“Puna ca-paraṃ, bhante, bhikkhu
“Again, and-furthermore, Lord, a-monk,
sukhassa ca pahānā
Pleasure's ** abandoning,
dukkhassa ca pahānā
pain's ** abandoning,
pubbeva somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā
previous elation-(and)-distress disappearance,
A-dukkham-a-sukhaṃ
Neither-pain nor-pleasure
Upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ
equanimity-(and)-mindfulness-purified,
catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati
fourth Jhāna (he) enters, dwells.
Idaṃ, bhante, anus-satiṭ-ṭhānaṃ
This, Lord, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ
Thus developed, thus pursued,
aneka-dhātu-paṭi-vedhāya saṃvattati.
Many-elements; -(their)-full-penetration it-leads-to.
Imāni kho, bhante, pañca anussatiṭṭhānānī”ti.

(6. Mindful activities for sati and sampajāno)

Tena hi tvaṃ, ānanda,

idampi chaṭṭhaṃ anussatiṭṭhānaṃ dhārehi.
this sixth recollection: remember (it).

satova kammaṃ adhiṭṭhāti.
Mindfully on-work (he) sets-attention-on,
Idaṃ, ānanda, anussatiṭṭhānaṃ
This, Ānanda, (is a) practice-to-be-recollected.
evaṃ bhāvitaṃ evaṃ bahulīkataṃ
Thus developed, thus pursued,
satisampajaññāya saṃvattatī”ti.
